First Communion
“Take and eat; this is my body.”
- Matthew 26:26
What is First Communion?
The Eucharist is The Source and Summit of our Faith
First Holy Communion is the sacrament in which a baptized Catholic first receives the Eucharist during Mass. Through a period of preparation, children are taught the meaning of the Mass, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and how to receive Holy Communion with faith and reverence. Receiving First Communion marks an important step in a child’s ongoing formation and fuller participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life."134 "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch." - Catechism of the Catholic Church 1324
Preparation for the Sacrament of First Communion
Sacramental Preparation is a two-year program.
Students must complete the minimum attendance requirements in Year One in order to be admitted to the Year 2 Class. Students are expected to attend 22 of the 27 scheduled classes to be considered prepared to advance to the next year. Therefore, students new to the parish must present a Letter of Attendance from their previous parish to be admitted to Year 2 Communion. In addition, students must submit a copy of their Baptismal Certificate and all Registration Forms PRIOR to admission to the Year 1 and/or Year 2 Sacrament Classes.
