Mass Manners
The Mass is where Heaven and Earth collide, and we come face to face with our Lord. We come to give our almighty savior what he is due from us. This is a moment in our busy week where we can slow down, be intentional, and make a special effort for our Lord.
With that in mind, we kindly ask that you prayerfully come to the Sacrifice of the Mass taking these simple Mass Manners into consideration:
- Prior to Mass, please keep conversations to a minimum in the Narthex to help us maintain a prayerful atmosphere.
- Refrain from attending Mass in overly casual attire, beachwear, sports memorabilia, and anything inappropriate to approach our Lord.
- Silence your cell phone and turn off any alarms before you enter the Church so as not to disrupt the Liturgy.
- During the Consecration, there should be complete reverence, practicing silent personal prayer.
- Try to avoid leaving your pew during the Mass, especially during consecration, to avoid distractions for those around you, the celebrant, and those assisting at the Altar.
- Please remain in the Church until the final blessing and the Priest has exited.
We at St. Michael make these requests from a desire to help each of us reach sainthood.
What is the Mass?
Welcome to God's Mercy
Mass is the central act of worship in the life of a Catholic. Going to Mass is about spending time with God, but also receiving his graces (inner strength to live the Christian life). The name 'Mass' comes from the final blessing said by the priest in Latin ‘Ite missa es’ meaning “to send out” as Jesus Christ sent his disciples out to the world to take his teaching to them.

Once you are in the Confessional The Sacrament of Confession (Reconciliation) involves four steps:
- Contrition: A sincere sorrow for having offended God, and the most important act of the person confessing. There can be no forgiveness of sin if we do not have sorrow and a firm resolve not to repeat our sin.
- Confession: Naming our sins—aloud—to the priest, who represents Christ and the Church.
- Penance: The prayers—or sometimes, the good deeds—the priest gives, for our healing and the healing of those we have hurt by our sins.
- Absolution: The words the priest speaks by which “God, the Father of mercies” reconciles us to himself through his death and resurrection, called the Prayer of Absolution: “God the father of mercies through the death and resurrection of his Son as reconciled the world to himself and the sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
